September 14, 2006 - Thursday
Robbinsville, NC to Williamstown, KY

Well, the weather looks decent enough - a welcome change from the drizzle and fog of the past few days. Today we'll head out on US-129 then curl back on the Cherohala Skyway. We'll decide at the end of the skyway if we'll turn back and ride the skyway again or process out on US-129.

Leaving Robbinsville heading over to the twisty bits of 129

Dry roadway, sun filtering through the trees - ahhhhh

Trucks are permitted on this stretch of road but I could see them being prohibited (at least the longer ones). TOTD has a page detailing "truck problems" on the road (clicky). This white truck, shorter than normal, was hauling through the turns quite quickly. Before long the white truck came to a stop - yet another truck - stuck. No traffic, aside from cycles, would be making it past until the long truck was pulled out.

Passing by them we had open road.

At some point in this pass the bike started to make a ticking noise. It kept getting louder through the trip. Loud enough that at fuel stops, when I'd start the bike, people would turn and stare. This page (click) details the problem. Little did I know that not more than a month later I'd be back in the area picking up a used motor... (clicky)

Just downhill from the overlook is a side road leading down to the Calderwood Dam Powerhouse. Never been there...

Up and out of the US-129 area we headed over to Vonore, TN for lunch.

From Vonore we headed south on S.R. 360 to Tellico Plains. A nice road.

From Tellico Plains we headed up to the Cherohala Skyway.

Well, we're out of the scenic roads and are heading back on the Interstates.
